About

My name is Doug and I save obituaries.

Well, maybe saving obits isn’t an addiction but it has become a habit of mine over the years. It started when I realized that more and more of the people who influenced my life were dying, and not surprisingly, I was growing older too.

Many times, the people who had influenced my life had long since fell out of the public eye, or out of my circle of influence of the moment. To read about them brought a sense of context to my life. After I began to read obituaries on a daily basis I quickly realised that often I didn’t even know who the people who influenced me were; only the vessel of their influence was known to me. For instance, I didn’t know who invented the sushi bar conveyor belt, but I sure did know and appreciate the invention.

As time went by, for me obituaries transitioned from announcements of demise to a rich, life-affirming form of education. I hope that the entries in this blog provide a rich education for you too, and help all who read them to celebrate life.
